What kind of alternator will fit in a land rover 1988 model?

The alternator in my land rover discovery 1988 model is getting really hot when I turn the car on and let it run so u think It needs a new one but will any alternator fit or can someone tell me what one or ones will fit

Cheers|||Here is a website that you can get one. It looks like it has to be for year 1987-1992 Land Rover

I would check your local parts store to see if they have better deals.

As far as any old alternator working (like if you have one laying around from another car) I would also ask your parts store about that and get the model number from the alternator.

To see if the alternator is working correctly.

Disconnect the battery while the vehicle is running. If it shuts off, the alternator is bad. If it keeps going, the alternator is good and there is something else wrong with the vehicle (such as a battery problem).|||This alternator has two wires connected to it. One thick one and one thin one. SO a huge range of basic alternators will fit from ancient 1970s Lucas ACRs to what is it a Bosch? As long as you can get it to bolt on it is a straightforward swap, but used Land rover alternators are cheap and widely avaialbe on Ebay and recons are not that mnuch so it is probably best to get one that is as specified.

Is it smoking hot? Is it hot because it is putting out a lot of charge because your battery is bad? I would not replace it without finding out more.
