What could excessive play in steering be on my Land rover discovery be?

I have just bought a 1997 Land rover discovery 2.5 tdi and there seems to be alot of excessive play with the steering. Can anyone tell me if this is how they drive or is it a common fault and what is it??|||there r a number things it could be, sway bar links, tie rod end, idler arm,etc but its hard to diagnose a specific problem over the cpu!! but if you take it to any place that does front end allignments they should be able to pinpoint the prolbem, because it will have to be fixed before they can do there job!!!|||There's a fair number of ball joints and linkages on these, not to mention the swivel hubs, and they are not exactly precise when tip top state.

Steering boxes are known to wear so it's difficult to be precise here.

Land Rover specialist would be best, put it in for an assement.|||You've managed to buy one of the biggest lemons around, all Land Rovers are junk, basically, and your eyes may pop out when they quote you the cost to repair it and re-align the wheels. Good luck with it.|||take it to auto repair place

the front end steering COMPONENTS are worn

there are limits

if you go over the advised limits you need to replace the warn parts|||before taking it to a Mechnic, check to see the level of the steering/power steering fluid if low add more|||there,s wear in the rack and pinion.
